Qualcomm President Anmon Responds to Snapdragon 865 Design Strategy: Compromise on Performance for Soc

Snapdragon 865

Snapdragon Technology Summit, starts this week, with two of the most impressive mobile platforms the Snapdragon 865 and 765 mobile platforms. Among them, 865 is the next-generation flagship product platform, and 765 / 765G can be understood as a sub-flagship platform. Both of which support NSA / SA, Sub-6GHz / millimeter wave and other features. They have significantly improved AI computing and Elite gaming performance.

But the difference is that the 865 uses a separate device approach with an external X55 baseband processor. The Snapdragon 765 / 765G mobile platform instead integrates 5G connectivity. In domestic social media, there is a lot of controversy surrounding the use of external basebands instead of SoCs on the 865 platform.

Cristiano Amon, the president of Qualcomm, was specifically interviewed by domestic media. He timely responded to the concerns of the industry.

Anmon said that in each intergenerational conversion of wireless communication technology. Qualcomm has always insisted on achieving the best performance in both modem and AP (application processor) through reasonable product design. “As we launch 5G modems that support the highest bandwidth, lowest latency, and highest reliability. We must build a mobile platform / processor that provides the best support for the full realization of 5G potential. The best performing 5G modems and The combination of the best-performing APs can best enable mobile terminals to support new 5G services”.

“So, our design strategy for the Snapdragon 865 is: Never sacrifice the performance of the application processor or modem just to make a SoC”. “Enabling new 5G services requires the best-performing modems and APs. If only 5G SoCs launch but the performance of either or one of them has to be reduce. So the potential of 5G cannot be fully realize, it is worth the loss”.

In fact, Qualcomm’s pursuit of performance is very obvious. Although the Snapdragon 865 platform uses a method of separating the AP from the baseband processor, it has better integrated the baseband processor and the RF system. Anmon points out that the Snapdragon X55 highly integrates multi-mode 5G modem. As a complete solution for modems and RF systems, it has many leading features. Because, in the 5G era, performance improvement needs to be achieve largely through radio frequency.
