People familiar with Apple’s production plans said that Apple’s popular wireless headset AirPods expects to double its shipments this year to 60 million. Thanks in part to the more expensive AirPods Pro demand “beyond expectations.”

The AirPods Pro is comes at a price of $249 and offers noise and water resistance. According to people familiar with the matter, sales of AirPods Pro have exceeded Apple’s expectations. Market demand is driving Apple’s assembly partners to break through capacity and technology constraints. Several suppliers are vying for production orders for AirPods Pro, although some of them are still improving production technology. Currently, AirPods Pro’s delivery time on Apple’s US official website is 2 weeks to 3 weeks.

At present, the most advanced wireless earphone on the market is call “true wireless” earphone. Which not only removes the wire between the earphone and the music source, but also has no wire connection between the two earphones. AirPods currently leads the market in the true wireless headset market. Which is manufacture by Inventec in Taiwan and Precision Manufacturing in the Mainland.

AirPods Pro’s total shipments this year will depend on the speed and effectiveness of the company’s business challenges to overcome the current production challenges. If AirPods’ overall shipments this year can reach the expected 60 million pairs, then Apple’s market share in the true wireless headset market should be able to remain at 50%. Market research firm Counterpoint Research expects total shipments of true wireless headsets to exceed 120 million this year.

An Apple spokesperson declined to comment.

AirPods sales have been driven by two iterations this year. AirPods Pro released in October and AirPods upgraded in March. The first generation of AirPods was release in 2016. For Apple, the obstacles to AirPods’ success in the holiday season have almost been eliminated. Microsoft has delayed the release of its true wireless headset until next spring. Google’s new wireless headset will not be available until 2020.

Counterpoint Research data shows that as of the end of August this year, Apple is clearly the leader in the global true wireless headset market. AirPods shipments far exceed any other alternative products. Apple’s other product, Beats Powerbeats Pro, is also among the top ten in sales. Although Samsung’s Galaxy Buds has been seen as an opponent of AirPods. Apple is the preferred brand for US consumers to purchase true wireless headsets in the future. Because AirPods is better in sound quality, portability and ease of use.

Apple is gradually adapting to the situation that iPhone demand is slowing down in the saturated market of smart phones. In this case, wearable devices such as AirPods and Apple Watch have become an important growth driver for Apple. In the past quarter, Apple’s iPhone sales fell to $33.4 billion from $36.8 billion in the same period last year. While the wearables, home and accessories business generated $6.5 billion in revenue, up 54% year-on-year, including Apple Watch, AirPods, Beats, HomePod and Apple TV.
