An industry insider Ross Young revealed that Xiaomi Mi 12 will use LTPO screen.
The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is the first smartphone with an LTPO display launched this year. Last year’s Galaxy Note 20 Ultra was also sporting this screen. Due to its high manufacturing cost, these are the only phones that use this display so far. Presently, not many smartphones come with this kind of screen. But now, the Xiaomi Mi 12 is going to be not the only smartphone using an LTPO screen. Moreover, the OPPO Find X3 series, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, Huawei Mate 50 Pro, iPhone 12s Pro/ Pro Max, and other models will also use LTPO screen.
What is LTPO?
To clarify what is LTPO in general, let’s discover its name. The full name of LTPO is Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide. In addition, the Chinese name is Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide. LTPO can significantly reduce the refresh rate of displays without any additional hardware. For example, the new Galaxy S21 Ultra will drop from 120Hz to 10Hz based on what you are watching, all of which happen in real-time. One of the biggest benefits of having an LTPO display is that the device can save a lot of power by reducing the refresh rate. However, the mass production of LTPO is very complicated, and with the complexity of the process, the cost burden will increase.
At present, the two main backplane technologies for the small size OLEDs are LTPS and oxide. The LTPO is a new type of backplane technology that combines the advantages of these two technologies to achieve higher charge mobility, stability and scalability at lower production costs.
LTPO is considered to be the technology of the future. The LTPO screen is currently one of the best displays in the industry. That’s probably why Samsung has taken the lead in using it on its super-large cup flagship.
In addition, Ross Young also revealed that Xiaomi Mi 12 may be released in 2021. It seems to mean that Xiaomi Mi 12 may come at the end of the year like Xiaomi Mi 11.
