Many people believe that foldable phones are the future of smartphones. There are already some foldable phones on the market. OPPO also has some ideas for sliding phone. It cooperates with Japanese design studio Nendo. They demonstrated a foldable design concept with three hinges.
OPPO calls it a “sliding phone”, which is a design concept machine. It means that it only exists on paper so far and there is no prototype.
This “sliding phone” has three hinges and can be folded three times. Unlike the concepts of Xiaomi and TCL, this design concept is more similar to Galaxy Z Flip, rather than the Galaxy Z Fold. With a triple-fold design, the device can be easily fit into the palm of the hand when it is folded. Swiping up for a fold will reveal a 40mm screen. Sliding up one-fold offers a 1.5-inch screen. There are some simple functions on the screen that do not require a full screen, such as call history, notifications, and music player interface.
Unfolding the phone a second time
Further sliding up, to unfold the phone a second time, offers a 3.15-inch display. It will reveal an 80mm screen. The company claims that it is good enough for taking photos and some casual gaming. When fully unfolded, the phone has a 7-inch screen with narrow bezels. However, the form factor is unusually long but could be good for multitasking, especially in landscape orientation. There are three camera sensors on the phone’s outer shell along with an LED flash. As the company is highlighting the phone’s design, the specifications have not been revealed. So, the hinge mechanism here can be used for the scene of the front camera.
Of course, this is only a conceptual design at present, and the possibility of mass production is still very low. The design of this new OPPO “slide phone” concept seems quite impressive but the fact is that we won’t be able to get hands-on such a device anytime soon. While the company has not confirmed this, the device is still a few years away from making its commercial debut.
