Samsung Electronics To Launch Three Foldable Smartphones Next Year

UBI said that Samsung Display is preparing three types of folding OLED panels. It means that Samsung Electronics is developing three foldable smartphones. These three models may be named the Galaxy Z Flip 2, Galaxy Z Fold 3, and Galaxy Z Fold Lite. All three models will use ultra-thin glass as a cover layer.

UBI Research pointed out that the punch design has not changed. But the Galaxy Z Flip 2 will have a 6.7-inch inner screen and a 3-inch outer screen. The internal screen size is the same as the first Galaxy Z Flip released earlier this year. But the external screen size has increased.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 may have an inner screen of about 7 inches and an outer screen of about 4 inches. Compared with the Galaxy Z Fold 2, the outer screen is slightly smaller. However, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will include an under-screen camera and will also support S pen. And the screen will use low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LPTO) thin film transistor (TFT) technology to improve screen efficiency.

Galaxy Z Fold Lite

The last Galaxy Z Fold Lite has been reported many times before. But some users discovered that the F450 is actually a Samsung M series model. The Galaxy Z Fold Lite will be the cost-effective version of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 to fulfill Samsung’s expectations of accelerating the popularity of folding models. The model will have a 7-inch inner screen and a 4-inch outer screen design.

UBI Research said that one of the foldable smartphones the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Lite will be released in the first quarter of 2021. At the same time, the Galaxy Z Flip 2 and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will be launched in the third quarter of 2021. The above three smartphones will use Samsung’s latest folding screen technology.

Korean media also revealed that the company will apply the stylus (S pen) to the Galaxy Z Fold 3. For this, Samsung Display is developing an ultra-thin glass with a thickness of 60 or 100 microns. This is a bit thicker than the ultra-thin glass (30 microns) used this year.

According to the reports, although 30-micron glass can make the glass softer, it cannot withstand the pressure of the pen tip. But on the other hand, 60-micron ultra-thin glass is less flexible. Therefore, Samsung Display is cooperating with German LPKF to study ways to make the folded screen more flexible.
